Planers are identified by the length of the cutting blades. The TRADESMAN Model #8312 PRO has two 12" high speed steel cutting blades; therefore, its description states it as a 12" Planer. The Thickness Planer is different from a Jointer because of its capacity to plane wider surfaces on one pass. Also different from the Jointer, it is capable of controlling thickness. Further, planers like the Model #8315 have an automatic feed system that pulls the work through the cutters and out the back.
An advantage of the new planers like the TRADESMAN Model #8312 PRO is their portability. Because of its size and low weight, it is easily transported to the job site and will offer capacities before found only on larger stationary units.
The planer can also be used to square-up old or rough lumber and remove old paint from woodwork. It is an essential tool for the tradesman in the construction of cabinets or furniture making.
